Luxury Beach House Reaps Investment in Accoya

The Setting:
A Dutch sea-side resort originally built in the nineteenth century, the 5 Star ‘Grand Hotel Huis Ter Duin’, located in Noordwijk, Netherlands.

The Objective:
To construct a luxury restaurant and bar adjacent to the historical hotel that will satisfy both practical and aesthetical demands.

Using Accoya:
In 2010 a Dutch Millwork Company, Van Leeuwen Kozijnen, was contracted to build a new beach house restaurant & bar to complement the existing hotel. Van Leeuwen decided to use Accoya wood for the windows, doors, cladding, railings, trusses, pillars and boxes; a favorable decision upon reflection: “We initially chose Accoya to clad as we wanted a material that required minimal maintenance but offered high aesthetic qualities to complement the design of the building. Accoya offered all of this and more.”

The Fifth Anniversary Inspection:
Despite being exposed to harsh weather conditions including heavy rain and battering winds, there were no signs of rot or decay to the property upon completion of an inspection five years following the Beach House’ opening. Accoya’s properties, often exceeding those of tropical hardwood, is just one factor that makes it ideal for high specification external applications.

The cladding was profiled, factory coated and installed with a translucent Sikkens Natural Balance coating system, and backed by a twelve-year guarantee. The Accoya wood itself will last at least 50 years, ensuring minimal maintenance required throughout the lifetime of the cladding.

Van Leeuwen continued: “We recommended Accoya wood for its outstanding durability and dimensional stability – attributes that really count in demanding coastal weather conditions. Dimensional stability is also very important when you have multiple adjacent doors in order to keep drafts at bay and prevent jamming. We’ve been very impressed by the building’s appearance five years on from its completion and are delighted that Accoya met our expectations and those of our customer.”

Laura Ladd, head of marketing for Accsys said: “The coated Accoya cladding still looks impressive despite having no maintenance throughout the last five years. This demonstrates just how strong and long-lasting Accoya is and provides a wonderful current example of the product’s durability.”

Accoya Wood
Created using Accsys Technologies’ propriety acetylation technology, Accoya delivers outstanding levels of performance including class 1 durability, sustainability and dimensional stability which prevents cladding joints from opening or twisting.  Made from FSC® certified wood from legal, manageable and sustainable forests, Accoya, is an attractive wood product which is Cradle to Cradle Gold certified and is perfect for a variety of uses from windows and doors to external cladding, structural projects and decking.

The product is Class 1 durability rated and comes with a 50 year guarantee when used above-ground. Accoya is also environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and has a significant reduction in shrinkage and expansion compared to its competitors.

“Looking at the Beach House now, we are extremely pleased with our choice. The appearance of Accoya with the Sikkens paint finish remains consistent on all sides of the building’s façade. It still looks as good as new.”
